QuartzLock Grout in Shower is Breaking Down - why?

Aid! Nosotros renovated our bathroom in October 2009 and had the shower completely re-done. We were not on-site for renovations, but we noticed that the grout was "pitting" in September 2022. Likewise, there seems to be calcium build upward on the edge of the grout (it started near the bleed).

Our contractor does not experience that he is responsible since information technology was iii years after. We accept been getting estimates for repairs.

Solution/Judge 1: Cry holes clogged. Volition supercede grout with StarQuartz2 since we have this on manus (our contractor did buy this for the states)

Solution/Estimate 2: the person who came today (second estimate) has seen this trouble with Star Quartz recently. He will try to remove former grout and supplant with epoxy. If it chips etc, the entire flooring will demand to be replaced.

My questions ...
1. Has anyone seen this problem occur years later on installation. I saw a thread, only it seems the grout crumbled soon later on installation.
ii. Has anyone tried to remove tiles that were installed with QuartzLock? Were you lot successful or did the tiles chip/break?
3. Is it possible that information technology is but weep holes that are chock-full and calcium is building up rather than a defective grout?

Welcome, Sylvia.

2. QuartzLock is not used to install the tiles, it is used only to grout between the tiles. Difficulty of removal will depend upon the bonding mortar used and the substrate to which the tiles were bonded.

3. Yes, simply that would depend upon how your shower receptor was constructed. Practise you take that information?

My opinion; worth cost charged.

Sylvia, this is not an uncommon problem most of the showers we did in 08, 09 and some of 2022 had to have the grout cut out and replaced.

Very carefully remove the soft grout with a fein tool and or a utility knife.

Remove only what is soft, typically it is the floor only and upward the wall 2 to three feet.

Quartzlok 2 will hold upwardly just fine if given enough time to cure. Read all instructions starting time.

DO Not Apply SCRUBBING BUBBLES THIS WILL Eat THE Sometime STAR QUARTZ AND Even THE NEW QUARTZLOK. Instead Employ soft scrub with bleach and soft bristle castor.

Will check in in the morning.

If the grout you have is from the original installation, it may be too old.

The weep holes may be clogged but if there isn't a preslope nether the pan liner, the water still can't get to the drain, even with open up weepholes. And, it'due south impossible to know if in that location's a preslope by looking at it. You lot might ask the original tile human if there is a preslope under the liner.

Found a Proficient Tile Installer to Piece of work with Me

Thanks to all of you for your replies. Unfortunately, I don't know very much about the installation because this was role of a large renovation where we hired a builder to oversee the project. Nosotros were non in town while the work was done -- just came in to bank check periodically.

I do know that it was StarQuartz and now the architect has bought QuartzLock2 and given it to u.s.. He has left information technology to us to notice someone to practice the repair.

The very good news is ..... I talked with an installer yesterday who has encountered this trouble with StarQuartz!!!! Thank goodness. I felt so relieved. He is coming next week to look at the tile and work with us.

I did not know about Scrubbing Bubbling. I take not used it, but I practice have some in the firm and so I volition get rid of it to avoid making a mistake.

Again. Thank you for the helpful comments.

Yikes -

Thank you, Lump. I go on it in the laundry room to clean my sink, but after learning its "dominance" and potential bug, I will throw it in the garbage.

Quartzlock2 fail

This seems an old thread but information technology is relevant to what I have happening. I used Quartzlock2 for a Wedi shower stall in my business firm dorsum in 2022 and I'm experiencing the same kind of softening and breakdown described here. While I'm not a a pro tile setter I am an accomplished Diy setter and while this was my start time using Quartzlock2 one of the things I'chiliad really good at is post-obit instructions precisely. The grout was done pretty early in the bath build so it was over a month between install and being put into service and so I don't think bereft cure fourth dimension could be a cistron. Scrubbing bubbles were certainly never used. This is on a river rock style floor so there is a large volume of grout. A 6" round area has come out completely and nigh of the rest of the flooring shows signs of softening and a complete re do seems pretty certain at this point. I'one thousand non sure what to use but I know it won't be Quartzlock2.

These types of grouts aren't supposed to be used with river stone floors. Especially in moisture areas. Y'all'd want to use a cement or epoxy grout that application.

This includes Quartzlock2 only besides goes for Fusion Pro, Flexcolor CQ, Plasma, etc.
